How I read?

I’ve spent my entire life trying out many reading strategies in an effort to discover the one that best suits me. After finding this one which worked, I wanted to share it in the hopes that you will find it useful as well.

My method can be summed up in 5 easy steps:

  1. Read for specific time
  2. Close the book and think
  3. Take notes
  4. Create simple mind map
  5. Repeat

Read for specific time

I set a timer for three(3) minutes and read for that amount of time, or possibly a little longer kind of— a paragraph or an essay — until I feel like it’s enough for me and won’t overwhelm my brain, at which point I stop and move on to step two.

Close the book and think to connect my current knowledge with what I read

I put the book down and try to think; in some circumstances, I speak to myself or to something that is in front of me. By doing this, I try to connect what I already know about the subject with what I just read.

Take notes

I don’t copy and paste text from book into my notes; instead, I record what I thought about in the preceding stage and I write it down.

Create simple mind map

After making a brief note of what I had read, I made a very basic mind map using the key terms from my note. If you don’t know what mind map is check this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map

Repeat

I simply keep repeating these steps till I have finished reading.

Reviewing earlier books

Another point is that this process has made it very simple for me to go back to earlier books, review notes and mind maps, and return all of the information for that particular book.

Conclusion

This video, in which Jordan Peterson explains the process, is where I got the idea on how to make it all. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_d7DdNzkLw. I’m hoping this will enable you to get the most out of your reading and learning.
